Elderly people should be treated with respect and not bought and sold like a commodity, the Liberal Democrats said this week.
As uncertainty still surrounds the future for residents and relatives of Stanley Wilson Lodge in Saffron Walden, Liberal Democrats have called on Essex County Council to demonstrated that it cares about its older resident, not just money. Cllr Peter Wilcock, Lib Dem Member for Newport and Deputy Leader of Uttlesford District Council, said:
"This has not only effected the residents of this home, but the many older people of the district who fear there may be no suitable venue in this area if they have to go into a residential home - I have been approached by a number of worried residents. Why can't we respect our more experienced citizens with a little more care and respect than trying to sell these homes into an uncertain private sector? They are vulnerable people, not a commodity to be traded.
"Essex County Council needs to maintain ownership to maintain high standards, so that if a private operator fails on standards, we would not let down our residents."
Councillor Geoffrey Sell, Liberal Democrat member for Stansted North, told the Uttlesford District Council Health and Housing Committee meeting recently:
"I have a personal interest as my father is a resident there, and on my recent visit the staff feel very angry and upset. They feel that despite all their good work, the County council has 'kicked them in the teeth'. They are very concerned that the standard of care would not be maintained once Stanley Wilson goes into the private sector."
Liberal Democrat Councillor for Saffron Walden (Audley) Chris Bayley, Chair of Health & Housing added:
"I have written to the County with the concerns of our community. One of the greatest concerns is that not only is Stanley Wilson Lodge transferred, either through disposal or sale of the freehold, but also the Day Care Centre. "Stanley Wilson and the day care facility is a lifeline to many people in and around Saffron Walden. We must stand up for some of the most vulnerable people in our community. "
