Councillor Richard Freeman explains the impact of Conservative plans to switch off Saffron Walden's streetlights.
The Conservatives who lead Essex County Council want to turn off most of the street lights in Uttlesford between midnight and 5 in the morning. The Conservatives say it will be less environmentally damaging - but the real reason is to save money.
The Liberal Democrats welcome energy-saving initiatives, but switching off the streetlights - long before the pubs close - may actually increase energy use as people go home by car instead of walking. The Institute of Lighting Engineers also doubts that the Conservatives' proposals will save energy overall. They suggest dimming streetlights - not switching them off.
