Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary Alistair Carmichael MP has called on the government to rip up the air transport White Paper.
The Liberal Democrats have called on the Government to abandon the previous White Paper and develop a new strategy for aviation which is genuinely environmentally sustainable.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, Alistair Carmichael MP said:
"The previous White Paper's 'predict and provide' strategy for air transport was fundamentally flawed.
"In the light of the Stern Review the Government must urgently revise its plans for aviation expansion. It would be absolute folly to make any plans to expand airports in the south east of England.
"The EU emissions trading scheme is not the panacea to reduced emissions that the Government claims. Reports suggest that it will have little real impact on emissions.
"The polluter must pay, but action to reduce emissions in one sector of the economy must not result in rises elsewhere.
"The Stern Review should be a wake up call to the Government. A new approach is needed to properly tackle emissions from aviation."
