Make the Green switch
LIBERAL Democrats in Uttlesford have welcomed the launch of Uttlesford District Council's first comprehensive climate change strategy.
Climate change is the biggest challenge facing the world today. The problem is global, but action to reduce the causes and adapt to the impacts of climate change must be delivered at a local level, by organisations such as the council. Among the key targets are a reduction of C02 from council operations by 25% over the next four and a half years and a reduction of C02 across the whole district by 80% by 2050.
Lib Dem Group Leader Cllr Peter Wilcock was among the many Councillors and representatives from partner organisations who gathered in the Council Chamber at Uttlesford District Council's Saffron Walden offices yesterday (Monday 29 October) for the official launch of the councils "A Greener Uttlesford" campaign, which will help individuals, businesses and other organisations play their part in the fight against climate change.
Cllr Wilcock commented "This was one of the many initiatives that we started over two years work and delivers on the commitment the council made when Cllr Mark Gayler signed the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change."
"We also invested in the new recycling system which is now regularly delivering rates of over 50% and will be saving the Council millions of pounds over the coming years by not paying for landfill tax. All of our residents must be duly proud of how they have contributed to the success of recycling"
