Chris Huhne MP inspects Uttlesford's highly successful recycling scheme which was brought in by the Liberal Democrats
Local Liberal Democrats are delighted with the success of the recycling scheme that they introduced to Uttlesford when they were running Uttlesford District Council, as recognised by the annual local authority recycling league table, compiled by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
Former Liberal Democrat Leader of the Council Mark Gayler said: "We were confident when we introduced the new scheme that it would bring a step change in recycling. Thanks to the efforts of local residents, the success of the three bin recycling scheme has now been confirmed by Government league tables."
"Increased recycling is a vital part of reducing our impact on the environment, and I am delighted with the success of our scheme."
Liberal Democrat Council Group Leader, Peter Wilcock added "By taking a long term view of Uttlesford and investing in this service, we have massively reduced the amount of waste going to landfill, and saved the residents of Uttlesford millions of pounds in landfill tax, and have done our bit to save the planet
"I am glad we invested in this service despite massive opposition from the Conservative Group not to introduce this system at the time. We now need to work to reduce the amount of waste created, and will continue to press the Government for measures to reduce excessive packaging."
