Cllr Peter Wilcock, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Saffron Walden Constituency, is backing Lib Dem Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable MP to get action to tackle the current economic crisis. The Lib Dems' top priority is putting more money in the pockets of ordinary people. The Lib Dems are calling for better pensions and a 4p in the pound cut in income tax.
Peter Wilcock said, "It's only right that people should keep more of what they earn to help deal with rising prices. At a time when we all have to tighten our belts, the Liberal Democrats do not think that Councils should be hoarding your tax money. This is why the Lib Dems have called on Essex Conservatives to hand back some of the County's council tax to hard-pressed residents".
Under Lib Dem plans, energy companies would be forced to cut prices for the less well-off and pay to improve home insulation.
"Energy companies have made massive profits from their customers. It's time that they helped those on low incomes.
"No one should have to choose between putting food on the table or keeping their home warm.
The cloud of falling house prices also has a silver lining. Of course, families facing the prospect of negative equity are anxious. The good news is that the next generation of young people will be more able to get on the housing ladder when mortgage-lending resumes. The Government must start encouraging housing associations and councils to acquire land or empty property, in order to keep up the supply of affordable housing."
