Members of Saffron Walden Constituency Liberal Democrats enjoyed a talk from Euro candidate Linda Jack at their Annual General Meeting in Stansted Mountfitchet on Friday November 28th. Linda hopes to join sitting Liberal Democrat MEP Andrew Duff in the European Parliament after next June's elections.
Linda spoke of the many benefits that Britain has derived from membership of the European Union such as maternity rights and health and safety at work legislation. She stressed the need for Britain to make a positive contribution to the European debate, instead of whingeing from the sidelines as the other parties do. Linda highlighted the campaign by Icelandic trade unions to get Iceland to join the EU because they recognise that nations working closely together can get out of the recession faster. She pointed out the value of the European Union in the fight against climate change and the growth of carbon emissions from Stansted Airport: individual nations acting on their own cannot take the decisive action that is needed.
Linda Jack praised the work of Lib Dem MEP Chris Davies in exposing MEP's who fiddle their expenses and pointed out that 2 of the MEPs elected under the banner of the UK Independence Party in 2004 had been arrested for alleged fraud.
At the AGM, the following officers were elected: David Morgan from Thaxted (Chair), Melvin Caton from Stansted (Vice-Chair), Alan Thawley from Felsted (Treasurer), and Liz Jones from Saffron Walden (Secretary).
