Lib Dem Dave Hodgson beat the Conservatives at the Mayoral election in Bedford on 15 October.
A wheel fell off the Cameron bandwagon today as Liberal Democrat Dave Hodgson stormed to victory in the Mayoral election that took place on 15 October in nearby Bedford. Labour and the Greens trailed behind in fifth and sixth position respectively. As part of his winning campaign, Dave urged local people to use their village and town centre shops more.
The result of the election, after the elimination of the other candidates, was:
Liberal Democrats - 13,352
Conservatives - 11,543
The Labour and Green candidates were eliminated in the first round, trailing in behind the independent candidates.
Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, expressed his congratulations saying:
"This is a sensational victory for Dave Hodgson and I congratulate him and the Bedford Liberal Democrats for an outstanding campaign.
"By electing Dave Hodgson as Mayor the people of Bedford have put their trust in the Liberal Democrats to work hard on their behalf.
"This result shows how misplaced the Conservatives' complacency about the next election really is. The Liberal Democrats have never taken a single vote for granted. With Labour lagging behind at a disastrous fifth this is yet more evidence that the real choice is now between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats."
