Prepare for an October General Election
Uttlesford Liberal Democrats were told by Tom Brake MP, the Lib Dem spokesman on Brexit at Westminster, to prepare for another General Election in October. Tom Brake was the speaker at a Supper Club event in Stansted Day Centre recently. The audience included some of the 50 new members that have joined the party locally in the last two months.
Mr Brake, the MP for Carshalton and Wallington in south London told local party members that the macho approach of the two candidates for the leadership of the Conservative Party will not alter the numbers in Parliament, where there is not a majority of MPs backing a so called "No Deal" Brexit.
"Boris Johnson has little chance of negotiating a new deal in the time available. There will only be 23 sitting days in Parliament available between his election of the new Conservative leader and the 31st October deadline.
"The alternatives to a disastrous no deal Brexit are a General Election or offering a People's Vote; choosing between the deal negotiated by former MP Theresa May, or remaining in the EU", Mr Brake said.
"The Conservative Government's preoccupation with Brexit means that Parliament are not tackling national issues that really matter - like rising inequality, rising obesity and the rising use of foodbanks," he added.
