Save our Essex Libraries Campaign News

Three pieces of good news this week on our campaign to keep Thaxted and Stansted Libraries open in Uttlesford.

Firstly Essex CC have offered Stansted Parish Council a one year deal of half the rent they originally agreed and to fit out the new library building. It gives the Stansted community a breathing space to persuade the county council to honour their commitment to take a 10 year lease on the premises.

Secondly, the opposition groups on the county council have successfully demanded an Extraordinary Full Council meeting to discuss the library cuts on the 12th March. They are calling for all proposed Library closures to be abandoned, better use of libraries as community hubs and maximise the use of library buildings and sites to generate income.

Members of the public can attend the meeting. They can ask questions if they email democratic.services@essex.gov.uk before the end of next Monday- 4th March.

Thirdly, over 57,000 people have signed petitions against the closures which are now also opposed by all 11 Essex Conservative MPs. Thanks to everybody in Uttlesford district especially in the Thaxted and Stansted areas who signed the petitions.

Please email your County Councillors asking them to vote against the closure of Stansted and Thaxted Libraries and reducing the opening hours at Saffron Walden and Gt Dunmpw at the meeting on the 12th March.
